So, Mom has already told her version of the needle adventure, so now it’s my turn.
Two Mondays ago I was sitting down on the floor and I felt a sharp pain in my toe. I looked and saw that a needle was, well, in it. I pulled it out and realized it was broken. I thought it was highly unlikely that the broken part was in my toe and didn’t think much of it. It bled a little and throbbed slightly but I didn’t think it was anything serious.
The next day it really hurt to walk normally on it, but again I didn’t think much of it because I had a sore throat and that seemed more pressing than my toe. Over the next few days I continued to get sicker and stayed in bed a lot. By the time the week was finished I felt much better, but then noticed that my toe was swollen and purple. Mom made me a doctor appointment for February first.
When we got there the doctor looked at my toe and then made us get some X-rays. Then when we got back the doctor said it was pretty obvious that a needle or part of it was in my toe and it wasn’t going to work it’s way out. I would have to get it surgically removed. My first thought was ” Oh no, mom isn’t going like how much money that will cost” and then I thought ” Wait, surgically removed? As in, cut open?” That was when the fear set in.
The doctor said we could wait a few days or he could make an appointment for that day. We made the appointment. When he left I immediately told mom I was sorry. I didn’t like the feeling of being the cause of so much money. Mom apologized right back.
The appointment was for about an hour or two later so we had time to stop at home. Dad was sympathetic and gave me the Cowen so I could watch Doctor Who. I ate a little, and played some Lego Clone Wars on the PS3 to help ease my nerves. When we got to the surgeons office Mom had to fill out pages and pages and pages of forms. When we finally got to the room I watched a little of the Doctor Who Christmas special “The Doctor, The Widow, and the Wardrobe”. That helped immensely because Doctor Who is so funny.
And then we had to get the needle out.
I lay on a table, sort of rolled onto my right side while the doctor gave me a shot to numb the pain. The first shot wasn’t so bad, just your basic shot. But then, either this was his second shot or still the first one I wasn’t sure, but a second pain hit lower than the first pain. It burned and stung and seemed to go on forever. Mom rubbed my arm while this was happening and it really helped.
Previously I’d declined to having her hold my hand, not because I thought it was silly I just thought it wouldn’t help me much. Well when he gave the shot I could of used a hand to squeeze. I don’t know exactly when my toe went numb, it just wasn’t and then it was. For awhile I could only feel a tiny pinch and pull in my toe area and nothing much else. But then gradually it began to hurt and I wished Mom hadn’t sat back down in her chair. The nurse held my other toes away from my big toe and she really had an iron grip that was solid and firm. It hurt a little. And then he got it out!!!!!!!!!
Oh I was relieved. He showed it to me and I was aghast. The previous doctor had told it was a centimeter long but let me tell you, you never realize how long a centimeter is until you have had it your toe. I sat up and was equally aghast when I saw all the blood on the cloth thing under my foot. I mean, obviously there would be blood, but I just never felt it and seeing so much was rather alarming.
The nurse wrapped my toe up and just kept wrapping and wrapping and wrapping and wrapping and wrapping and wrapping until I was sure I’d never be able to walk to the car. And it didn’t help that it hurt like the Dickens. Mom and I switched shoes and that was somewhat easier. When we got back to the car I put my foot on the dash board which helped. I watched the rest of the Doctor Who episode on the way home, of course. As if I wouldn’t finish it. So anyway four days later my toe feels great and I can walk normally again. I’m supposed to soak my toe in warm water and Epsom salt once a day and though my toe still looks nasty I am basically good as new.
